KYSITE Newsletter April 10th 2014

Hello KYSITE! vehicle_tipping

So….you’ve heard of cow tipping, right?  Well, that’s so rural.  Apparently, the new trend is “Smart Car tipping”, at least in California. In the last couple of weeks, there have been several Smart cars that have been tipped over by large groups of young folk.  Let’s hope it doesn’t become a trend around these parts. Thanks for reading.  And don’t forget to contact KYSITE if you need anything.

Hello KYSITE!

A high profile ‘traffic study’ recently made the news as a result of a bridge / ramp closure in New Jersey.  While we’ll stay out of the politics of this one, it’s not everyday that traffic engineering becomes a punchline on late wordpressnight tv.

The New York Times had an article on Monday about this topic.  Featured are quotes from ITE International President Hibbett Neel as well as long time ITE Member Sam Schwartz.  Check it out.

And to have a little fun, how about a few jokes:

“Clearly, somebody is getting thrown under the bus. Fortunately for them, the bus isn’t moving. It’s stuck in terrible traffic.” -Jon Stewart

“Let’s talk about the big game yesterday. The Seahawks beat the Broncos 43-8. The Broncos are blaming it on a traffic study.” – David Letterman

“Why did the traffic engineer cross the road? Because that’s what they did last year.” – unknown

See you at the Spring Meeting!

Hello KYSITE!

Hello KYSITE!

Happy end of February to you — Spring is right around the corner (we hope). The big question of today is…”Have you been playing Monopoly wrong all of these years?”  I was skeptical when I read the article, but I am guilty as charged.  The rule states:

“If you do not wish to buy the property, the Banker sells it at auction to the highest bidder,” the Monopoly rules state. “The buyer pays the Bank the amount of the bid in cash and receives the Title Deed card for that property.”

Who knew?

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hello KYSITE!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all!  To celebrate, here are a few random quotes about love:

“Only time can heal your broken heart, just as only time can heal his broken arms and legs.” – Miss Piggy

“If love is the answer, could you please rephrase the question?” – Lily Tomlin

“I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury.” – Groucho Marx

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” – Ali MacGraw, Love Story

Love is grand; divorce is a hundred grand.” – Unknown

“Love is a lot like a backache, it doesn’t show up on X-rays, but you know it’s there.” – George Burns

With Love,

Spring Meeting Announced!

Spring time in Kentucky

Hopefully spring weather is just around the corner, and with that in mind the KYSITE board has been working hard to put together the Spring meeting to kick off the year.  We will be returning to UK’s campus in the Civil Engineering Raymond Building (some of us have fond and not so fond memories of time spent here).   The meeting is scheduled for March 25th, 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM.

Many of you remember the entertaining match between our Traffic Bowl students and UK professors last year.  Not to be outdone, the practioners want in on the battle, so this year we will have 3 teams competing for bragging rights. Stay tuned for more infomation on the speakers and presentations topics.  A map of campus can be foundhere with parking and building location information.  Special thanks to Director Eric Green for coordinating.

Seeking SDITE Awards Nominations!

With the SDITE Annual Meeting just around the corner, the KYSITE Board would like your help in nominating members from KYSITE to be honored at the District level.

5 individuals in the District will be recognized for outstanding contribution to the organization.  Please click Awards Descriptions for more on the individual awards.

Nominations can be submitted to Vanessa Fritsch.  The deadline for submissions is February 4th.

Message from KYSITE !

Hello KYSITE!

We like to have fun sometimes around here (probably a bit too much sometimes), but our goal is to provide you with information about the transportation engineering / planning world while keeping you mildly amused.

This week in the intro, we’d like to briefly focus on the decline of highway related deaths within the Commonwealth.  In fact, 2013 marked the lowest number of fatalities since 1949.  We would like to thank everyone who works hard every day with safety in mind that is responsible for this downward trend.

That being said, we all know that 635 fatalities are still too many.  Therefore, let’s join in the initiative and aim Toward Zero Deaths.

Let us know if you need anything from KYSITE!
