TRB Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee Mid-Year Meeting in Lexington

Dear Transportation Friend,

We have a unique opportunity within the Kentucky transportation community this summer as the Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee (HCQSC) of the Transportation Research Board will hold its mid-year meeting in Lexington. The conference will be held June 11 – 14, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency hotel.

As most of you know, the HCQSC sponsors the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), the world’s leading transportation reference document. My introduction to the Committee was in College Station, Texas in 1988; my subsequent involvement with the Committee has had a significant impact on my career as a transportation engineer and planner.

This is an exciting time for the HCM. On the heels of the 2010 HCM publication, an update is underway to include recent research on topics like travel time reliability, MAP-21 performance measures, truck level of service, and a Planning and Preliminary Engineering Applications Guide. Our mid-year meeting will include important decisions by the Committee on how these topics should be incorporated into the HCM.

I hope you will be able to join us for this historical occasion in Kentucky. Even if you are unable to participate in the entire conference, please consider attending the luncheon on June 12th sponsored jointly by the HCQSC and the Kentucky Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. An electronic registration form for that event is below, along with an announcement for the conference.

A high profile ‘traffic study’ recently made the news as a result of a bridge / ramp closure in New Jersey.  While we’ll stay out of the politics of this one, it’s not everyday that traffic engineering becomes a punchline on late wordpressnight tv.

The New York Times had an article on Monday about this topic.  Featured are quotes from ITE International President Hibbett Neel as well as long time ITE Member Sam Schwartz.  Check it out.

And to have a little fun, how about a few jokes:

“Clearly, somebody is getting thrown under the bus. Fortunately for them, the bus isn’t moving. It’s stuck in terrible traffic.” -Jon Stewart

“Let’s talk about the big game yesterday. The Seahawks beat the Broncos 43-8. The Broncos are blaming it on a traffic study.” – David Letterman

“Why did the traffic engineer cross the road? Because that’s what they did last year.” – unknown

See you at the Spring Meeting!
